What Avenir is, and why pairing it is easy to get wrong
Adrian Frutiger drew Avenir in 1988 as a humanist answer to Futura: geometric circles and clean joins, but with shortened ascenders, a two-story lowercase a, and slightly open spacing that keeps long text readable. That mix is the whole personality. Pair it with another geometric sans and the page goes flat, because both fonts are making the same statement. Pair it with something that has real contrast (a serif with ink in it, a mono with attitude) and Avenir gets to do what it does best: organize the page quietly.
The practical wrinkle: Avenir and Avenir Next are commercial faces licensed through Monotype. They ship free on Apple platforms, which is exactly why so many mockups look right on a designer's Mac and then fall back to something else everywhere Avenir isn't installed. Source Serif is cooler and more technical than Lora, which makes this the pairing for products that explain things: docs, reports, anything with footnotes. It stays crisp at small sizes where Lora starts to glow.

If the design calls for sans everywhere, resist adding a second sans. A mono for labels, numbers, and eyebrows gives the contrast a second sans can't, without introducing a competing voice.
Free stand-ins for Avenir, ranked by what they preserve
- Nunito Sans preserves the warmth. Rounder terminals, similar proportions, comfortable at body sizes. The default choice, and the one used in the specimens above.
- Jost preserves the geometry. It leans closer to Futura than to Avenir, so it works when the brand wants the colder, more architectural end of the same family.
- Plus Jakarta Sans preserves the contemporary feel. Slightly more character than either, drawn for screens, and the stand-in to pick when the design skews product rather than print.
- Mulish preserves the neutrality. The quietest of the four; body text disappears into it, which is a compliment.
One honest caveat: none of these is Avenir. The differences are visible in a specimen at 96px and invisible in a paragraph at 16px, which is the size most of your users will actually read. Choose by role: Jost for display, Nunito Sans or Mulish for text.
A pairing is two decisions; a system is a few hundred

Weights per role, a type scale, letter spacing, line heights, and the colors the type sits on are the rest, and they are the ones that quietly fall back to defaults when a coding agent or an AI app builder fills the gaps. Is Avenir free to use on a website?
No. Avenir and Avenir Next are commercial typefaces licensed through Monotype, and a desktop license does not cover web embedding. They ship preinstalled on Apple devices, which is why they render in local mockups and then fall back elsewhere. For the open web, use a licensed webfont or one of the free stand-ins above.
What is the closest Google Fonts alternative to Avenir?
Nunito Sans, for overall proportions and warmth at text sizes. Jost sits closer to the geometric end (more Futura than Avenir), and Plus Jakarta Sans reads as a more contemporary take on the same idea. Mulish is the most neutral of the group.
Does Avenir pair with Montserrat or another sans?
Avoid it. Montserrat is also geometric, so the two fonts compete for the same role and the hierarchy has to survive on size alone. If the design must be all sans, keep Avenir for everything and add a mono for labels and numbers instead of a second sans.
Avenir or Avenir Next: does the choice change the pairing?
No. Avenir Next is the 2004 reworking with more weights, real italics, and small caps, so it is usually the better buy, but its voice is the same and every pairing on this page applies to both.
