Is Proxima Nova free?
No. It is a commercial family sold by Mark Simonson Studio and through Adobe Fonts, where a Creative Cloud subscription covers web use. There is no legitimate free download; for free projects use Montserrat, Figtree, or Plus Jakarta Sans as stand-ins.
Montserrat or Proxima Nova: are they really interchangeable?
At display sizes, close enough that most viewers can't tell. In body text they diverge: Montserrat is wider, rounder, and airier, while Proxima Nova sets tighter and more neutrally. If body text matters and there's no license, Figtree is the closer double.
What serif goes best with Proxima Nova?
Merriweather for substance and screen-first body text, Lora for warmth, Playfair Display or Fraunces when the serif takes the headline instead. All four share enough contrast with Proxima Nova's clean geometry that the hierarchy reads instantly.
